John 13:12-17
12. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13. Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
15. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
To me, this is one of the most beautiful "action pictures" painted by our Savior in His entire ministry. It was the custom in those days, if you were having company, to have a servant or someone else at the door when the guests arrived to wash their feet. People wore sandals and walked pretty much everywhere they went, and if you combine that with the heat and dust of Palestine you can get some dirty feet. However, when the disciples arrived for what we know as the "Last Supper", none of them took care of this responsibility. Truthfully, they were each too proud to do so. If you read back not long before this, you will find that they had been arguing about who would be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. I have to think that bits and pieces of that attitude were still in their hearts.
Jesus saw a perfect opportunity to teach a valuable lesson to the disciples. He put on some old clothes, got a bowl of water and a towel, and- without a word- set about washing all of their feet. Of course they weren't happy with this at all! This was Jesus- the Lord! He shouldn't be washing peoples' feet! That was beneath Him! But Jesus had to drive home to them that, in the eyes of God, all men are equal. There is not one better than another. Just as Jesus came to be a servant, so we should seek to be servants as well. He was Holy God, and He was humble. How can we who are much less than a Holy God be any different?
Let's commit ourselves to being the humble servants that God has called us to be. How else are we going to reach the world for Christ?
Thanks Bro. Chad for the remind to me. I appreciate you and your work. Thanks for being God's Servant.
