Luke 23:34- "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." And they parted his raiment, and cast lots."
Jesus spoke these words as He was hanging on the cross. As we read these words, it is common for us to think that He is referring to those who were hanging Him on the cross. Now please don't get me wrong. This would be a correct interpretation of the Master's words. However, I think that there's also another way of looking at them.
I have often wondered if, when Jesus spoke these words, He was thinking of every sinner, not just those who were physically crucifying Him. My friends, it was the sin of all mankind that nailed Him to the cross. That was why Jesus died on the cross. That was why He shed His blood. He had all of us on His mind that day. I firmly believe that we don't fully know how much our sin saddens the Lord and how much He hates it. It could be truly said that we "know not what we do"! Yet Jesus loved us enough to give His life for us.
Isn't the depth of Christ's love amazing? There's no question to me why this is the "greatest story ever told". (To borrow a phrase from the Christmas season.) What a wonderful Savior He is!
thanks Pastor Chad.... as someone else already said... we could get use to this on a daily basis. Please know how much we appreciate all you do for us here.
Interesting, Pastor Chadster. I heard somebody put it this way once, that those who aren't Christians, sin because "they don't know any better". And it's true, they 'don't know what they do".
Someone apart from Christ will lie because they don't know any better. So I guess that means we shouldn't be surprised...
Thanks for this thought today!
