The Providentials announced plans for the 5th Annual Providentials Homecoming
with special guests Gerald Williams & His Melody Boys as well as Shepherds Call on Saturday October 27, 2007 beginning at 6:30P.M. at the spacious Southwest
Mississippi Community College Auditorium in Summit, Ms.
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with prayer and singing of the National
Anthem. Southern Gospel Music Quartet, Shepherds Call from McComb, Ms. will kick off the evening singing. The Providentials Quartet of McComb,
Ms. will take the singing stage next followed by The Melody Boys from
Little Rock, Arkansas. Lead singer and spokesmen for the Providentials, Joe
Young explained, “we count it an honor and privilege to have Southern Gospel
Music Hall of Fame member Gerald Williams and his Melody Boys at the
Providentials 5th Annual Homecoming.”
Young continued, “Gerald Williams joined the Stamps Baxter Melody Boys
Quartet in 1949 when he was 16 years old, which was run by Smilin’ Joe Roper.” The Melody Boys were on stage at the very first National Quartet Convention in
Memphis, Tennessee in 1957.
The Melody Boys currently consists of
Gerald Williams (Bass);
Terry Robertson(lead);
Scott Baker (Tenor); and
Columbia, Mississippi native, Caleb Matheny (Baritone and Piano).
“We decided when we began our homecoming concerts that we wanted to begin and carry on the tradition of the classic male quartet. The Melody Boys fit the bill,” said Young. “Our fans embraced the four men and a piano approach last year. We heard the demands of the people. The up-tempo piano style and dynamic vocal presentation evokes the spirit of revival in southern gospel fans.”
The southern gospel quartet Shepherds Call from McComb, Ms. has a
growing ministry in southwest Mississippi with a distinct synergy in their
presentation. The quartet consists of singers:
Darrell Boyd,
Greg Smith,
Phillip Hemby,
and Jeff Taylor.
“We are elated to share the stage with Darrell and Greg again after these many years.” referenced Young.
The Providentials Quartet based in McComb, Mississippi began in 1999 and
currently consists of:
Joe Young (lead),
Lane Reed (baritone),
C. O. Stegall (bass),
Tim Johnson (tenor),
& Reggie Duncan (road manager and sound engineer).
The Providentials have recently released “Glory Hallelujah Song” to Southern Gospel Radio on the April, 2007 Sonrise Christian Voices compilation disc. This release is the first single off the Providentials project “Past Met Grace.”
