Title: Devotional: Week Of 10/29/2007
Description: John 12:32

John 12:32- "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."

First of all, I realize that, in strict context, Jesus is referring to His death when He is speaking here. However, I don't think I would damage Scripture by using this verse to illustrate a principle that is very much Scriptural.

First of all, we see Him speaking of being "lifted up". It ought to be the goal and practice of every Christian to lift up the name of Jesus at all times and in all things. He is to have first place in all things, for that is where He rightfully belongs.

Next, we see a phrase that is commonly omitted when this verse is quoted- "from the earth". Common sense says that, if Jesus is to be "lifted up", He is to be lifted up from something. As I read this, I began to think about how many Christians and churches want to bring God down to their level. Now, before I am misunderstood, allow me to elaborate. I fully understand the truth conveyed in the Gaither Vocal Band song, "He Came Down To My Level". But realize that Jesus came down to our level in order to lift us up from our sin into fellowship with Him. The churches and Christians I was referring to earlier, however, are those who bring God down to their level so that they will feel better about where they are, not so He can lift them up to where they should be. They want to make Jesus fit the world rather than trying to change the world with the Gospel to fit Scriptural principles. And we wonder why the power of the Holy Spirit is not as evident today as we would like it to be!

Finally, we see the phrase, "will draw all men unto me". If Christians will lift Jesus up as He deserves, then He will draw people to Himself. If He is the main attraction, then no other attraction is needed! I'm not against promotions, methods, etc., but they should point to and be focused on Him rather than becoming the main attraction themselves. We need to stop trying to do the Holy Spirit's job for Him!

How are you lifting Him up today?
