Hello fellow SGM fans. I have loved Gospel Quartet music for much of my life. I have memories of all night singings in Augusta,Ga. from the time I was very young. I guess it was around the early 50's and Augusta was a very active city with many newcomers due to the building of the Sav. River Plant. My folks tell me that the all night singing were held every other month for a while.
I contiued to love the music into my teens and started buying records when I had a paper route. After hight school I spent four years in the Air Force and five years away from home total. I sorta lost touch with Gospel Music as I was in the Northwest and Southeast Asia during that time. I did see The Blackwood Brothers at a Church in Spokane, Wa. a couple of times and the Cathedrals with Rex Humbard once.
After returning home I started to attend concerts when they would have them and that was in the early 70' with such groups as The Inspirations, Goodmans, kingsmen, Oaks, Stamps to name a few.
Around 1985 I got interested in finding more old records of the quartets. I started out trying only to find Statesmen and Blackwood albums but along the way found others and met some other men who were collectors. I have around a thousand albums I guess and I call my collection modest and I play my records and do not put a high value on sealed albums as some do but do appreciate collectors that have been able to aquire those types of collections.
I enjoy hearing and reading about the history of quartet music and look forward to learning new things.
