Description: Acorns and Oaks

JohnCBoy - December 20, 2007 01:27 PM (GMT)
Prior to Willie Wynn joining the Oak Ridge Quartet, they had a tenor singer who left the group with injuries suffered "when a stove blew up in his face".

What was his name?

Just a guess--Calvin Newton.

JohnCBoy - December 20, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
Knowing Calvin, that's quite easy to assume. :D However, this guy was with the Oaks after Calvin departed.

James Moore - December 20, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
Bobby Clark

Jetrec - December 20, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
I believe it was Hobart Evans.

JohnCBoy - December 20, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
Hobart Evans is correct. From the stories I've read, Bobby left the quartet when they decided to go part-time.

James Moore - December 20, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
Did Smitty Gatlin sing tenor before Hobart Evans? He was their tenor once and Tommy Fairchild lead/pianist.

JohnCBoy - December 20, 2007 09:12 PM (GMT)
When Smitty (re)formed the group, it consisted of Hobert Evans, Smitty, Ron Page, Bill Smith, and Powell Hassell.

Bill Smith left and was replaced by Herman Harper.

Evans left and was replaced by Bobby Clark. That only lasted a few weeks and Clark and Hassell left the group. I'm not sure if Clark left first or if Powell Hassell left first. They may have left at the same time.

Tommy Fairchild joined the group and they became a four man group with Gatlin singing tenor, Fairchild singing lead, Page and Harper singing baritone and bass.

JC you never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of SMG. If you don't already have one, you need to be awarded a Masters Degree in SGM...

I agree, popsy........in fact, I would go one step farther. I think John needs to be awarded a Doctor's Degree.

James Moore - December 20, 2007 10:53 PM (GMT)
I agree, John has a tremendous knowledge of SGM. On this very subject I remember getting an email from Little Willy Wynn about the Oaks tenor singers, and I post it on another forum and John Crenshaw replied and told me of someone Little Willy had left out , and he was right.-John you`re knowledge of SGM is terrific. And if I still had that saved I`d post it.

James Moore - December 20, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
I found those post on AMGS.
This is from Willy Wynn-

Hi James,

So nice to hear from you.
I do remember recording with your brother.
How is he doing?

To the best of my knowledge, these are the tenors with the Oaks.

Little Johnnie New

Calvin Newton

Hobart Evans

Bobby Clark

Willie Wynn

Joe Bonsal

I may have missed someone.

Have a great day.

Willie

This is John`s reply-

Willie missed Joe Allred, Cat Freeman, and Smitty Gatlin (yes, he was the
tenor for a short time).

Calvin Newton didn't sing tenor with the Oaks. He sang lead when Joe Allred
was the tenor.
