Gary McSpadden sang lead with the Statesmen Quartet for a few months, filling in for an ailing Jake Hess.
During this time, the Statesmen recorded one song.
What was the name of the song and where can it be found?

"When I come to the end of the road" on the Singin' time in Dixie album?

I have a CD that was put out a few years back by Memory Lane and there is one cut by The Statesmen on it "Hide Thou Me" and I thought that Gary was on this. Although the song is mostly Rosie on the first part of the song it just sound different than Jake or Jack. The CD is "Go Out To The Program" and is live cuts and is an interesting collection. Only has the one Statesmen song however.

Rich, you're correct here. I had forgotten that the song had been reissued by Harold Timmons on that CD.
Here's another question . . . where was the live recording of "Hide Thou Me" by the Statesmen recorded and on what LP was it originally released.
RichL - January 3, 2008 07:25 PM (GMT)
Not sure about this question but I do know that there is a live version of this song on tape from May 1959 in Ft.Worth, TX but it was not done by a recording company and was never released to my knowledge.
The first release of this song as far as I know was on the early Skylite album "Get Away Jordan"

I believe the song was on Lloyd Orrell Presents the Second Northern States Quartet Convention - Skylite - in 1962.

Thanks, Dean. That's the answer I was looking for!
I've been doing some rearranging of my recordings in recent days and came across those "Northern States Quartet Convention" records. Hadn't played them in many years.

John, what about the first response. I am curious as my copy of Singing Time in Dixie does not have that song on it. I do think that another version of Singing time in Dixie was put out and that is one of the few Statesmen albums that I do not have. Are the songs different on that record and is that what he is talking about.
dannygilbert - January 3, 2008 10:15 PM (GMT)
Rich, are you confusing the Statesmen's "Singing Time In Dixie" on Skylite with "Singing Time In Dixie" on the Stateswood label (orginally) which comprised of of groups from syndicated tv show of the same title i.e. Statesmen, Blackwoods, Stamps, Speers?
RichL - January 3, 2008 10:21 PM (GMT)
Might be Danny, but I think there was a reissure of The Skylite "Singing Time in Dixie" I will look at discography later, gotto run right now it's Bar- B- Q time

The only re-issue of the Skylite "Dixie" I'm aware of is not really a re-issue at all but just a jacket re-vamp. The original jacket was bi-fold with a full sized and nice outdoor pic of the guys on the front cover. I suppose to cut costs, the jacket was later downsized to the standard sleeve type and a kinda cheesy front cover design...a small studio pic of the guys with a list of the songs arranged around the pic over a blue-green background.

Rich the lp that you are referring to was a reissue. The songs are the same but the cover is different. The original was a gatefold cover that had photo's of the members of the quartet and their families. The reissue was a standard cover with a small photo of the quartet on the front. Also, the original version had the black label on the record and the reissue had the gold label. I am sure that this was a Joel Gentry deal.

Danny, it looks like you and I are on the same page............just a minute apart.
JohnCBoy - January 4, 2008 02:25 AM (GMT)
"When I Come to the End of the Road" is on the Singing Time in Dixie compilation album, but I believe it's the Stamps singing it. My cover says "Blackwoods", but I think it's wrong.
The Statesmen recorded "When I Come to the End of the Road" on the "All Day Singing" album. That might be where the confustion set in. However, Jack Toney sang it on that LP.

Also since Gary McSpadden recorded "When I Come to the End of the Road" with the ORB (on Warner Bros LP & the live NQC LP) that may be part of the confusion...in fact now I'm confused! :whew:
