Lamentations 3:22-24
22. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

23. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

24. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

It is very rare that I hear a sermon preached from the book of Lamentations. This is probably because Lamentations, as its very name suggests, tends to be somewhat of a sad book. However, some encouraging things can be found here, and these verses are a great example of that.

We are reminded that, being sinners, we deserve to spend eternity in the fires of Hell. However, because of the compassion of a loving and merciful God, we have a way by which we can escape Hell in favor of a home in Heaven with Him. What is even more amazing than that is the fact that this same mercy from God is new for us every morning. It never runs out! This is why Jeremiah could say, "The Lord is my portion". The word "portion" here carries the idea of "something that fills", and Jeremiah knew that his merciful God h ad everything he needed.

If anyone had reason to be discouraged, it was Jeremiah. He had an extraordinarily tough time in his life and ministry. However, he knew where to go for encouragement. And just as God had everything that Jeremiah needed, He has everything we need. His mercy truly is wonderful.
