I wish this picture was a little clearer, but I think those of you with keen eyesight can figure it out.
Who is the group in this picture and what are the names of the members?
Here's a hint: Four of the five people pictured here went on to perform in a quartet that is still quite active today.

Is this an early version of the Florida Boys? Looks like J G Whitfield, Joe Whitfield, maybe Coy Cook on the far left and Sue Whitfield at the piano? I think all 4 were later members of the Dixie Echoes.

I think this is The Messengers Qt. but I'm not sure of all the members but think that they are Joe, Sue, and J G Whitfield, George Forbus not sure about the other one Maybe Doyle Wiggins.
Of course the group of today that some of those went on to later is the Dixie Echoes
dannygilbert - February 12, 2008 04:03 PM (GMT)
I'm guessing they are an early version of the D.E.'s.
JohnCBoy - February 12, 2008 04:23 PM (GMT)
You folks are correct in that many of the musicians in the picture became members of the Dixie Echoes.
Joe Whitfield is the lead singer, so Rich and Jackfanatic are correct here.
Doyle Wiggins is the baritone, so RichL is right there, too.
Sue Whitfield is the pianist. That wasn't very difficult, was it?
Now's when the water hits the wheel . . .
Coy Cook is not the tenor. I would be surprised if anyone knows the tenor. I had never heard of him.
JG Whitfield isn't in the picture, either. However, the bass singer is quite popular and most of you would know him.
Lastly, this isn't the Messengers Quartet, although three of the members of this group formed the Messengers a few years later.
I think the date for this picture would be 1955 or 1956.

Oh me that's got to be Billy Todd on the bass, didn't think it looked right for Whit but just thought it was because he was younger.
Mark Stephens - February 12, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
Looks like Billy Todd to me also.
JohnCBoy - February 13, 2008 01:01 AM (GMT)
Billy Todd is correct.
The tenor's name is ??? Green. Maybe it's Don. I'm not certain.
Now, what's the name of the quartet?
RichL - February 13, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
John, I have a book about Mr. Whitfield and I've gone back through it and these are the only quartets that I can identify that he had a hand in
The Gospel Melody Quartet
The Messengers QT.
The Dixie Echoes
Florida Boys
Workman
Senators
The Happy Hitters
I don't know if this group is any of those
JohnCBoy - February 13, 2008 06:34 PM (GMT)
Great research, Rich. However, the name of the quartet isn't on your list. I don't guess Mr. Whitfield had a part in this group. He was still singing with the Florida Boys at the time.
Here's a hint. Billy Todd had just come out of service when the quartet was formed.
If nobody has the answer by tonight, I'll post the correct response.
JohnCBoy - February 14, 2008 01:20 PM (GMT)
The name of this quartet is the Veterans Quartet.
