What group is thought to be the first to provide a microphone for each member of the group?

What was the reasoning behind this decision?

J.D.Sumner, and so he could control the voices that came over the mics.

The main voice J.D. wanted to edit out is a good singer today.

That would be a person who sang baritone for the Stamps whose last name rhymes with smackwood. :whistling:

You`re right Q-man. LOL-And would you say he and I posses the same first name?

This is a good trivia question! JD was a very smart man even though he did not have a high school diploma or college degree.

Maybe I was trying NOT to say that. ;)

Good guesses, folks, but JD actually got the idea elsewhere.

It's been written in so many places that people have taken it to be fact . . . however, it's not 100% accurate.

VirginiaJoe - April 17, 2008 11:40 PM (GMT)
Was it the Speer Family that J.D. got the idea from?

JohnCBoy - April 18, 2008 01:10 AM (GMT)
No, Joe, that's not where JD got the idea. However, knowing how active Brock and Ben were in the recording studio, it's a great guess.

James Moore - April 18, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
John could it be Elvis Pressley and his background singers.

JohnCBoy - April 18, 2008 01:33 AM (GMT)
No, James, these were full time gospel singers.

Blue Ridge Qt or Florida Boys

JohnCBoy - April 18, 2008 03:05 AM (GMT)
Kinda sorta. . .

KLB - April 18, 2008 03:46 AM (GMT)
He might have had more than one reason. I'd guess that he wanted a mic all for himself so he could crank up his and/or reduce the volume of others for a better overall sound------------and more and louder bass, especially when he wanted to rattle the rafters; and he did. 'course it's just a guess.

Vinylman36 - April 18, 2008 09:38 AM (GMT)
Probably the answer would be Jimmy Blackwood.

Looks like we got a little off track here.

The actual story goes like this.

During the days of the Gospel Singing Caravan, the Johnson Sisters and Pierce LeFevre worked up an acapella arrangement of "Haven of Rest". Pierce sang bass on this song. Knowing that he wasn't a true bass singer, he felt that he needed to get close to the microphone in order to be heard. He had a seperate microphone for each of the Johnson Sisters as well as for himself in order to sing "Haven of Rest" to perfection.

Seeing how good they sounded using the four microphones, the Blue Ridge decided to go to four microphones. Soon thereafter, they were in concert with JD and the Stamps. JD heard the improvement in sound and blend and immediately decided to go to four microphones as soon as he got back to Nashville.

So now you know . . . the rest of the story.
