Description: Mark 12:41-44

Mark 12:41-44
41. "And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much."

42. "And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing."

43. "And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:"

44. "For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."

These verses, I think, give us valuable insight into the mind of God in regards to giving. However, don't think that this only applies to money, for we have far more than that to give.

Here we find Jesus in the temple observing the people as they came to give their offering. In Bible times, they didn't "pass the plate" for the offering. Instead, the people came up to the coffers and cast in their offerings. Many rich people would make a big show of putting large offerings in so that people would notice it and brag about how "spiritual" they were. As He observed, a poor widow walked up and quietly put two "mites" in the offering. (This was the equivalent of just a few cents.) This got Jesus' attention, unlike the rich peoples' big offerings.

What was so special about this widow's small gift? Jesus said that she had given all she had. In her mind, all that she had was God's. Therefore, she was not going to hold anything back from Him. This, my friends, is what I think God is teaching us here. God needs people who are willing to give Him their all, because that's what he deserves. And, a Christian with this type of heart always gets His attention.

Examine your heart today. Are you willing to give God your all, or are you holding something back?
