Title: Hit or History Classics
Description: Week #27

JohnCBoy - September 18, 2006 04:38 AM (GMT)
Welcome to week #27 of Hit or History Classics.

You couldn't decide whether to lounge in the pastures or stand by the river last week, so I broke the tie.

This version of challenger this week isn't extremely old, but the song has been around for many years. The Statesmen Quartet originally recorded this spiritual in the early 1950s and the Dove Brothers brought it back a few years ago. Get ready to watch McCray jump over a fern!

So here are your choices:
"Standing By the River" by the Plainsmen and "Get Away Jordan" by the Dove Brothers.

Please list the song title or the group name when you vote, and thank you for playing "Hit or History Classics".

Well..if you were talking about the Statemen's version...I would have chosen Get Away Jordan but....I will chose Standing By The River

I wish that everyone on this board could have heard The Plainsmen sing Standing by the River in person. It's been 30 years. It was unreal!

I've been pondering and pondering..........

I love "Get Away Jordan" by the Dove Brothers. Hearing that song on the radio was what made me sit up and take notice of them. I really don't like hearing it anymore in concert, because they ALWAYS do it right after "Didn't It Rain", and McCray can't breathe and sing at the same time. You know..... if I wanted to hear someone breathe hard instead of sing, I could listen to (fill in your own blank). Spread out the songs during the concerts, and give them the respect that they deserve. <stepping off soap box now, sorry>

My vote.......... "Get Away Jordan" - because I love the version that is on the CD.

I just remember that McCray CALLED Kattie to set her straight on the actual lyrics.

Is this an exaggeration, Chat Diva?

:rollinglaughing:

Am I being truthful for a change??? :whistling:

Ahhhh yes Johnnnny you are. McCray did call me one afternoon and told me the "correct" words to Get Away. :rollinglaughing:

He did happen to call on a cell phone belonging to someone with the initials of "JCB" and said person was close enough to overhear the conversation. :kekeke:

Yeah, Kattie.......your public wants to hear. :doggie:

In an extremely close vote, the Dove Brothers are now standing by the river Jordan waving goodbye to the Plainsmen who have been atop the classic mountian for several weeks.

Thank you all for your votes!
