Title: Monday trivia
Description: . . . one hit wonder

. . . or maybe even less than that!

This group of gentlemen had a very short career in gospel music. So short that I don't think they even released a commercial recording.

All of these gentlemen sang in other groups.

What was the name of this group and who are the members in this rare picture?

VirginiaJoe - September 18, 2006 01:02 PM (GMT)
I have no idea who the group was, but I think I recognize a couple of the members.

The one on the left looks mighty familiar, so I will be disappointed that I can't put a name with the face, but that looks like Jay Simmons next to hiim. I'm fairly certain that is Jim Hill next, and I will guess the little guy on the right is Little David Young.

VirginiaJoe - September 18, 2006 01:03 PM (GMT)
Well, come to think of it, that may be Jim Boatman, instead of Jay Simmons....lol.

JohnCBoy - September 18, 2006 01:35 PM (GMT)
Joe, you got Jim Hill and David Young correct, but that curly haired guy isn't Boatman or Simmons.

Keep on trying!

Ben Pegues - September 18, 2006 02:22 PM (GMT)
Is that Don Butler next to Hill?

JohnCBoy - September 18, 2006 02:33 PM (GMT)
Yes, Ben, it's Don Butler.

Ben Pegues - September 18, 2006 03:02 PM (GMT)
John, could this be Hill's group and a forerunner of the Golden Keys? This is a little before my time and I didn't follow all the "northern groups" !!

James Moore - September 18, 2006 03:31 PM (GMT)
Isn`t that The Golden Keys Quartet with -L-R, Fred Rose,Don Butler Jim Hill,David Young. And I don`t know the gentleman that is seated.

JakeFanatic - September 18, 2006 03:40 PM (GMT)
I know it's not, but the guy on the far left looks like Hot Rod Hundley. He was a basketball star who played for West Va. U and now is a radio announcer for the Utah Jazz. Maybe Dean can come up with a picture of Hot Rod so we can compare the two.

JohnCBoy - September 18, 2006 03:57 PM (GMT)
I think Jim had left the Golden Keys for a while when this group was formed. This quartet was only around for a few weeks/months, and it wasn't a "Northern" group . . . but Ben thinks Georgia is northern in relation to Texas! ;)

. . . and no, JakeFanatic, it's not Hot Rod! LOL! :babyha:

Ya'll should recognize the guy on the far left. He was in three major groups. The guy at the bottom was the bass singer for a few groups including the Goodmans and the LeFevres.

James Moore - September 18, 2006 04:04 PM (GMT)
Camp Meeting Boys?

JohnCBoy - September 18, 2006 04:24 PM (GMT)
It's not the Camp Meeting Boys, but it is a name that's been used by many quartets through the years.

This guess may be out in left field, but is that Bob Robinson on the top left? And by the way, North, in Texas is anything North of the Red River since the center of the universe is located in Texas. In Texas, we consider Whitey Gleason and the Jubilee Quartet Yankees.

James Moore - September 18, 2006 11:13 PM (GMT)
Ambassadors with Jim Hill, Bob Robinson, Don Butler, Bill Huey and "Little"David Young.

In Louisiana, we considered anything North of Bunkie, a yankee.

Mark, are you from Louisiana? Where in Louisiana?

I am not, my wife is. She was borned and raised in Vernon Parish, over on the Texas side. I lived there for 10 years then moved her north of I-20, thus making her a bonafide yankee and incurring the wrath of all her kinfolk who have yet to forgive me.

Sorry, I missed your answer yesterday, James. You are correct. It's the Ambassadors. . . a very short lived quartet.
