This gentleman was recently seen via video at the bass singer "competition" at the National Quartet Convention.

Who is he and what famous quartet was he a part of?

Thenewsisout - September 22, 2006 02:19 PM (GMT)
Rev. John Hamrick of the Homeland Harmony.

He was also the winner of the bass competition too. The majority won out with the judges. Ed O'Neal and Scoot Shelnut voted for John Hamrick while Les Beasley voted for "Muscles" Sego. LOL

Had there been a best tenor competition, Gene McDonald might've won that one.

I agree, but you beat me to it!!

It's a good thing I didn't post. He looked like Tony Jarman to me! :D

Yea, and Les would have won Best lead singer, too. Can I get an Amen out there?

Picture looks like it was taken from a Singin" Time in Dixie TV show. A couple of years ago Charlie Waller sold a video of clips from the show and one with Hamrick doing a solo was included. Hovie mentioned John was a preacher but don't recall Hovie saying John had been in Homeland Harmony.

news, you are correct as usual.

Norm, your eyesight is 20/20 because that's exactly where I got that picture. He was singing "When I Trade This Ole Life For a Crown". Hamrick was a good friend of Lee Roy Abernathy. Several of LeeRoy's pupils sang that song.

I have a video of Hamrick singing bass in a quartet with Lee Roy and Shorty. Hamrick was the editor of Gospel Singing News (I think that's the name). That was one of the first (if not THE first) gospel singing magazine not affiliated with a particular music company.

Johnny passed away just a couple of years ago.

Here he is with the Homeland Harmony Quartet.
