Description: Statesmen albums

JohnCBoy - October 21, 2006 11:48 AM (GMT)
This Statesmen album had the distinction of being the most expensively produced album in Skylite record history.

What was so special about this record that made it so expensive to produce?

Hits of the Decade. And it was decorated in gold leaf. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

James Moore - October 21, 2006 01:36 PM (GMT)
Probably because it`s a double album with many photos.

Mineola - October 21, 2006 02:30 PM (GMT)
John is up to his old tricks. The album pictures is not the album he is talking about. Hits of the decade had a simply cover with leaves and gold leaf over them. You didn't fool me this time.

Singing Time In Dixie's album jacket had more to it than the previous album jackets that were release of the Statesmen, like color photos, and the album opening up like a photo book, making it more expensive to produce. If I am correct, there is two versions of the "Singing Time In Dixie" jackets.

Nope, I'm not up to my old tricks, Mineola. Brent, you got it right.

Hits of the Decade was a HeartWarming release. Not Skylite.

"Singing Time in Dixie" wasn't a double album, but it did have a gatefold cover. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first gatefold (or fold out) album cover in gospel music history. There may have been another, but I can't recall it.

The cover art, photography, and album design made this the most expensive LP in Skylite history.

Brent you're also correct in that this LP was later issued with another cover that was much less elaborate and less expensive to produce.

Those family pictures can often lead to problems too! :whistling:

Was the STID Album recorded before the Rebels "Family Album"?

Dean

JohnCBoy - October 22, 2006 12:26 PM (GMT)
Dean, I would guess that "Family Album" was released before STID, as was "I Believe" by the Couriers. So, in retrospect, "Singing Time in Dixie" wasn't the first gospel gatefold album. In fact, it wasn't the first gatefold LP on the Skylite label either. "At Home with the Blackwood Brothers" was released on the Skylite label prior to "Singing Time in Dixie".

I stand corrected.

However, the Singing Time in Dixie LP cover was still the most expensive LP in the Skylite catalogue due to the expensive photography. See Dave Taylor's book, "Happy Rhythm" for more details as related by Brock Speer.

Note to self: Don't write these questions early on Saturday morning when you should be sleeping. :good night:
