1. Arthur Smith
2. Cracker Jacks

All of your answers are correct, popsy.
Now let me ask this a little differently.
What was the name of the group when they performed gospel music?
James Moore - October 22, 2006 06:18 PM (GMT)
Arthur Smith and The Crossroads Quartet.
I think we have a recording of them called "What On Earth Have You Done"
James Moore - October 22, 2006 09:30 PM (GMT)
John, wasn`t Arthur Smith born James Arthir Pritchett?
JohnCBoy - October 22, 2006 09:30 PM (GMT)
Hmm. . . I suppose I could ask him. . .

His biggest secular hit might have been the instrumental "Guitar Boogie," recorded with the Tennessee Ramblers, in 1948. It was later transformed into a top tive hit, "Guitar Boogie Shuffle," by the Virtures in 1959. It, of course, also gave him the name Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith.
He also wrote the title song of Willie Nelson's breakthrough album "Red Headed Stranger." The album apparently sold 2 million copies. So I guess Arthur has earned a few royalties through the years.
He and his son performed at the 2005 Grand Ole Gospel Reunion.

Arthur Smith also wrote "He's Everywhere". It is a great bass lead song that is the current radio single for The Melody Boys Quartet. In fact in your latest Singing News you will find it in Chart position #65. I love to hear Gerald sing this wonderful old song that he first recorded over 50 years ago! You can go to the Quartet's website and hear the song.

I remember watching Arthur Smith on television back in the 60's, I think.
I Saw A Man is still one of my favorite gospel songs. The Rebels recorded it on a
SING album (SLP 8002), The Rebels Quartet.

He also wrote the song "Dueling Banjos" that was featured in the movie "Deliverance".
There's a great story about collecting roylaties there, too!

As a child I used to love watching the Arthur Smith Show. I always enjoyed the variety of music that was featured on the show.

Hello,
You didn't ask, but the members of the Crossroads Quartet shown in the photo are from left to right standing: Arthur Smith, Carol Honeycutt, Tommy Faile, and Sonny Smith(Arthur's brother.) Sitting are "Little Wayne" Haas and "Brother Ralph" Smith. Arthur always ended his syndicated television show with a hymn or a gospel song by the Crossroads Quartet.
JohnCBoy - October 23, 2006 02:25 AM (GMT)
No, I didn't ask, but I sure am glad you told us, KLB. :D
I wasn't certain who all of the folks were, and I don't like to ask a question I can't answer!
Thanks for your help!
