Title: Friday trivia
Description: Why???

JohnCBoy - November 3, 2006 01:04 PM (GMT)
. . .would a gospel quartet appear in public dressed like this??

Ben?? Mark??

When I saw these coats, I thought it was from an outtake from "Gone With The Wind". I thought the Plainsmen had cut up the living room curtains for their stage attire.

:rollinglaughing:

Stanger things have been seen before in Southern Gospel Music. Take for instance the color schemes that have been used on some artists buses during the 60's and 70's.

PS: By the way John, it is 67 degrees here in beautiful Kissimmee, FL this morning. If it gets much colder I am going to have to get out my coat! :beach:

Face it John, your just jealous you don't have one. You think these suits are loud. Does anyone know how to spell Thrasher Brothers. Those suits were so loud, they came with batteries.

Mineola - November 3, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
And another note. I bet Charlie wishes he knew where they got um.

John

I recall reading in one of your articles that one of the fellow's mothers made him a coat of many colors. It looked so sharp that he wanted to wear it on stage. Since gospel traditionalists insist all quartet members dress alike, the fellow got his mother to make matching jackets for the others guys. ;)

Looks more like the living room rug to me...they may have not had much taste in clothes but they sure could "sang"...First time I heard Thurman I thought he had a cold...but that was just his "tones"...what a great singer and group..

You know, if you stare at those suits long enough, you see a picture.

Mark Stephens - November 3, 2006 03:31 PM (GMT)
At least their not PINK!!!

Besides, I think it was Rusty's idea.

LOL....what makes you think he doesn't?

James Moore - November 3, 2006 04:18 PM (GMT)
They would, and did. I wonder where they got those costumes?

musicmike - November 3, 2006 04:45 PM (GMT)
I don't know where they got their coats, but I do know that the album that has this picture on the cover is a great one. The Lonely Street album has some of the best quartet harmony I've ever heard.

It beats some of the stuff the Goodmans wore.

Sam in a tuxedo, or the Plainsmen in those beautiful coats of many colors. What an observation, John.

Ben Pegues - November 3, 2006 09:13 PM (GMT)
John, on back cover of that same album is another picture of The Plainsmen wearing their conservative suits. You should show us that picture.

And ruin their reputation?

JohnCBoy - November 4, 2006 01:18 PM (GMT)
Since we were discussing some alarming outfits, I just couldn't let this thread die without posting this picture. Anyone remember the 1973 Oaks?

Since this was before the days of video games, when they were killing time on the bus, they used their coats to play board games.

musicmike - November 4, 2006 02:28 PM (GMT)
All I can say after looking at all these wild outfits is AAUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Mark Stephens - November 4, 2006 06:13 PM (GMT)
Is that Sterban? I guess I never knew he sang with the Oaks at the same time as Willie.

Hmmm. Learn something new everyday, at least here at SGM radio!!!

JohnCBoy - November 4, 2006 06:51 PM (GMT)
Sterban and Willie were together for a while. During that time, they recorded what I think is one of their finest albums, Street Gospel.

Ben Pegues - November 6, 2006 09:01 PM (GMT)
John, You bought or listened to Street Gospel? I thought you were a lover of real quartet music!!

JohnCBoy - November 6, 2006 09:09 PM (GMT)
I liked it. Grew up with it.

Guess it's like you liking LP. Must be an acquired taste that I never acquired.
