What gospel group was responsible for the 1974 Canaan album release "1686 Pounds of Gospel"?

. . . and NO, it wasn't the Happy Goodmans!

CanChik - November 7, 2006 07:06 AM (GMT)
The Kingsmen :D

Chicky wasn't sleeping well, but her brain was quite active. . . :whistling:

Good job, Chicky!

The album cover shows the Kingsmen had seven members at the time. That means the average weight of each member was 240.86 pounds.

Followup questions: A country music entertainer wrote one of the songs on the album. Who? And what two other famous gospel groups also recorded the same song?

I believe that would be Johnny Cash, but I don't know which other groups recorded "Over The Next Hill We'll Be Home." BTW, 2 or 3 of those guys weren't really big, so some of them must have been real whoppers.

LOL...

I even guessed it before I googled it to confirm, Johnny...aren't you proud of me?

Great job Canchik on getting the Cash song. Of the two big-name groups that I know recorded it besides the Kingsmen, one was a big mixed group and the other was a famous quartet.

I think Kingsmen drummer John Broome weighed in at over 420 lbs.. I remember seeing him in the hall at The NQC, just after The Kingsmen came off-stage I SURE DIDN`T WANT HIM TO FALL ON ME!!!

John, The Happy Goodman Family was one of the groups.

That's right James. Goodmans did Over the Next Hill on their 1974 album "Happy Goodman Family Hour."

The famous quartet that recorded the song did it in 1975 on the Skylite label.

The Lefevres recorded it on their "Stepping on the Clouds" LP.

Thank you Dean for adding that information. That makes at least four famous SGM groups that recorded the Cash song -- Kingsmen, Goodmans, Lefevres and a well-known quartet.

In a book referring to the recording by the well-known quartet, Cash wrote: "This is certainly one of the biggest thrills and honors I have ever had."

To which group and specifically which member of the group is Cash referring?

Norm - November 10, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
For the record, the Blackwood Brothers were the quartet I was looking for that recorded "Over the Next Hill We'll Be Home." It says so in that book John C helped write about the Blackwood recordings.

In the Cash quote, the honor to which he referred was that James Blackwood recorded one of his songs.

Glad you remembered it, Norm, because I didn't!

I just always seem to hear Rex Nelon's melodic bass voice when I think of that song.
