Are these statements true or false? (That gives you a 50% chance today!)

At one time, the Sunshine Boys hired a famous lead singer so that Eddie Wallace could spend his time just playing the piano.

Jake Hess left the Statesmen Quartet in 1956 to join the Sunshine Boys.

True

False

James Moore - December 7, 2006 01:44 PM (GMT)
False, Jake was never a member of The Sunshine Boys.

I'm wondering if the one about Jake is a trick question. I'm pretty sure he left the Statesmen for a time in 1956 but can't recall why. Maybe his plan was to join the Sunshine Boys but possibly that plan fell through.

If that was the case (don't know that it was) you could say he left the Statesmen to join the Sunshine Boys.

JohnCBoy - December 7, 2006 02:10 PM (GMT)
Jake did leave the Statesmen for a few months 1956-1957 to sell pianos and work as a solo artist. During that time, he often performed on programs with the Sunshine Boys and the Homeland Harmony Quartet, but they were singing backup to Jake's solos. He was never a member of either of those groups.

The Sunshine Boys have never been a five man group. Ed Wallace has always been both a vocalist and pianist for the quartet.

Dean...........Is "John Boy," pulling my leg..........

JohnCBoy - December 7, 2006 03:00 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't do that.

Here's a picture of the Statesmen without Jake. That's Les Roberson beside Denver Crumpler.

Jake wasn't a member of the Statesmen when Denver died.

Now JC would never try to pull your leg....OR would he??

Mark Stephens - December 7, 2006 03:48 PM (GMT)
I assume Jake's short hiatus to sell pianos in 56 - 57, was a different time frame from when he left for health reasons and was replaced for a short period with Gary McSpadden.

So I guess the answers were:

False and False?

Do I get any credit for getting one of them right? :babyha:

How many times did Jake leave the Statesmen and then come back?

WOW! I thought I knew everything there was to know about the Great ONE!! I knew he stepped aside for a few months but I didn't know that was the same time as Denver's passing.

Ben Pegues - December 7, 2006 07:12 PM (GMT)
I heard that Jake regretted doing that piano store. He later said it was a mistake to leave the Statesmen.

BTW take a look at the grins on faces of Burl Strevel and Ace Richman. Do ya think they're tickled to be on stage with the One and Only!

I have a question
I saw The Statesmen in Neosho, Mo. Rosie was their tenor then, but Gary McSpadden was filling in for Jake then. Now I was thinking that Jake was ill, does anyone know for sure about this, it was probably in the early sixties. Thank You

JohnCBoy - December 8, 2006 02:39 AM (GMT)
Gary did fill in for Jake for a few months when Jake was ill. Gary was on a live Statesmen recording (one song) from that time frame. Must have been 1962 or so just prior to Gary joining the Oaks.

James Moore - December 8, 2006 02:56 AM (GMT)
Thank You John.

VirginiaJoe - December 8, 2006 03:59 AM (GMT)
I was fortunate to see the Statesmen while Gary was filling in for Jake. I believe he was 19 at the time.

quartet-man - December 12, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
Gary got hired by the Oaks after his short fill in stint with the Statesmen. My understanding was that Jake was upfront with the Oaks that he would hire Gary in a group when he started one (or something like that.)

You're right Q-man. Gary was one of those hand picked by Jake to be a part of his new group. Jake told Smitty that he wasn't ready to start the new group but when he was Gary would be a member.
