Tony Silcox is the founder of Light Soldiers Ministries. He is available for both
singing and preaching engagements. “Reflections” is the Tony’s latest album. It was recorded and produced by Lamp Music Group in Whitesburg, GA. It contains four of Tony’s most-requested past songs along with six new ones.
The cover art of the album is clean and simple. There is a picture of Tony sitting on a chair playing his guitar. The background is black, with the album title written in white script in the top left-hand corner. Tony’s name is written in red script across his picture, but it is a little difficult to see. The song lyrics were not included in the album cover, which was somewhat of a disappointment to me.
Now, let’s take a look at each of the songs on the album.
The first song is called “Be A Reflection Of Jesus”. It’s an upbeat song, and Tony does it well. He has a lead/baritone range to his voice, and he seems to stay within that range.
Song #2 is “I Surrender All”. It starts off with a slow, smooth rendition of the hymn, “Search Me, O God”. Then, it goes into an upbeat, Gospel-style rendition of the familiar hymn indicated by the song title. In my opinion, Tony tries to “jazz up” this song too much. He uses a lot of “vocal acrobatics”- slides, moves, runs, etc.- that take away from the song itself. It would have been much better for him to have kept this part of the song in the same style as the beginning rendition of “Search Me, O God”.
Song #3 is a medium-tempo number entitled, “Call On Him”. Here, Tony goes back to more of a straightforward style of singing with just a few vocal slides/runs thrown in. This leads into the fourth song, another upbeat number called “I Can Trust His Heart”. This is one of my favorite songs on this album, and Tony sounds very good as he sings it. The only thing that could be worked on is that, in a couple of places, Tony isn’t quite in sync with his background vocals. This causes a little bit of difficulty in listening.
Song #5 is called “The Key To Heaven”. It’s another smooth, medium-tempo ballad. This seems to be the type of song that Tony does the best. I would definitely have to classify this one as another of my favorites from this album. This is followed by a slower, but still medium-tempo song entitled, “Moment By Moment”.
Song #7 is called “Be Not Afraid”. This is another medium-tempo song that has more of a traditional Southern Gospel feel to it. Tony does nothing “fancy” on this song, and that is what, in my opinion, makes it a pleasant listen. The tempo then speeds up a bit for the upbeat 8th song, “I Love You Jesus”.
Song #9 is the only true “slow song” on this album. It’s entitled “What’s Best For Me”, and it is another of those songs where Tony’s talent really comes through. The album ends with the 10th song, the upbeat “Blood Medley”. This is a medley of songs about the blood of Christ, and it is a fitting end to this album.
One of Tony’s strengths is his song selection. Each song on this album has a clear and powerful message. Vocally, I think that Tony does best when he minimizes the “vocal acrobatics” and just sings the songs in a straightforward manner. He has a smooth voice that, given the opportunity, can pretty much stand on its own- especially on the medium-tempo numbers. Finally, I would add at least one more slower, ballad-type song to this album. This would give more of a variety to the album. At times, it seemed like there were too many medium-tempo songs in a row.
Overall, I feel that this album deserves 3 out of a possible 5 microphones!
