Yesterday, some of you were discussing some of JD's "backup basses". KLB mentioned a couple of names. Actually, four men sang bass with the JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet in addition to JD Sumner.
Who were they?

OK, the only names I can come up with are the two that were mentioned yesterday, Richard Sterban and Larry Strickland (who was married to Naomi Judd at one point), and Ed Wideman (who was a Canadian).

I had to toss a Canadian question in just for you, Chicky!
There's only one missing link. . .

Johnathon is right as I taped a TV appearance with the Stamps in which Tommy sang with the group backing up JD on a solo.
On another point, various websites indicate Naomi Judd filed for divorce from Larry Strickland in 2000. I don't know if it ever went through and by 2004 or earlier they were back together.

Speaking of Tommy, he also filled in with the Masters V when JD couldn't be there.
Didn't he sing baritone with the Melody Boys, Jonathan?

Maybe, I'm a little fuzzy on that one.

Yes, John, I believe you are right on that fact. I do not own the 45's (little records! <smile>); however, I think Ben's son owns them. It was a joy to meet and hear Tommy at the GOGR when he sang bass for that "conglomeration" of the Statesmen Quartet.

Someone left a comment on the video thinking the appearance would have been around 1980 or so. Did Ed Hill leave the Stamps to be in the Statesmen again, or was that an error? I know Ed was with them in the early seventies and quit the Stamps after Elvis died and before David Ponder joined. He later went to the Singing Americans, but I can't remember where he went when he first quit.

Q-man, I'm not sure what you mean by "leave the Stamps to be in the Statesmen again".
Ed left the Stamps around 1977 and was replaced by Richard Lee. He joined the Statesmen in 1979 when Jake and Chris Hess left to go to work with Dr. Scott. Ed joined the Singing Americans after leaving the Statesmen.
I'd say that 1980 would be an accurate time frame for that Statesmen video.

Was Dr. Scott that televangelist from the west coast??

Yes he was. Same guy that's on the video that James linked in his post.
